Houston’s Craft Beer Scene Has Taken Off

The summer heat and humidity in Houston have been largely unrelenting this year. But that doesn’t (and shouldn’t) stop Houstonians from enjoying all the great things that city has to offer. Just as Houston has evolved and developed in exciting ways in recent years, so has its craft beer scene. The variety and quality of small-batch brews being concocted continues to improve, much to the delight of beer-lovers with more discerning palates.

Houston is a city with global influence, owing largely to its economic might. Houston is also a globally-influenced city, due to the tremendous geographical and cultural diversity of the people who call the Bayou City home. Regardless of whether they are natives of the city or transplants, many Houstonians are driving a new trend: keeping it local. Farmers markets, locally-sourced food at supermarkets, farm-to-table restaurant, and yes, locally-brewed artisanal beers have become increasingly popular.

The craft brew scene that has sprung up in Houston is testament to the fact that an increasing number of people are showing a preference for craft beer instead of lighter Bud, Miller, and Coors products that have saturated the market for many years.

Founded in 1994, St. Arnold Brewing Company is the oldest—and many would argue, best—microbrewery in Houston.  St. Arnold was the only microbrewery operating as of 2007. Since then, roughly a dozen others have popped up within an hour’s drive of downtown, from Galveston to the southeast, Conroe to the north, and Katy to the west. Beer aficionados and those who simply appreciate the taste of good beer are benefitting from the talents of Houston’s brewmasters. Some of the city’s top breweries include: No Label, Southern Star, and Karbach. Tours, tastings, and private events are a great way to learn more about the brewing process, chat with the brewmasters and staff responsible for creating the craft beers, and enjoy keeping it local by sampling new beers or enjoying your go-to brew.

A friendly reminder: please be sure to drink responsibly and have a designated driver, use public transportation, or call a cab.
