Discover the Technology and History of Manned Space Exploration4.5.16

The Lyndon B. Johnson Space Center, named in honor of the late US President and native Texan, is the human spaceflight center of the National Aeronautics and Space Administration. Going to the magnificent Space Center Houston, the JSC visitor center, in the Clear Lake area of Houston is a must. During your stay with Kozi Corporate Housing in our furnished apartments in Houston, take a short drive outside of Downtown and explore the amazing technology and storied history of human space travel.

The Johnson Space Center (JSC) is perhaps most associated with its role as flight control for NASA flight programs. Mission Control Center is responsible for mission success and safety from the moment a manned spacecraft takes off until it returns to Earth. It is also responsible for planning and training of the pilots. Mission Control was responsible for the Apollo, Skylab, and Space Shuttle program flights, among others. It remains responsibility and monitors all human spaceflight on behalf of the United States, including American astronauts aboard the International Space Station.

NASA made the US the first country to put a manned aircraft on the lunar surface in 1969. Disembarking from the Apollo 11 Commander, Neil Armstrong and Edwin “Buzz” Aldrin took the first moonwalk. “One small step for man, one giant leap for mankind,” were the famous words uttered by Armstrong from the moon back to Mission Control in Houston.

Although it’s often misquoted as, “Houston, we have a problem,” the famous words communicated by the moon flight crew of Apollo 13 were, “Houston, we’ve had a problem.” Despite aborting the intended moon landing, the Apollo 13 astronauts returned safely to Earth after technical malfunctions.

In addition to Mission Control, JSC also houses training facilities for NASA’s astronauts. Most notably, the Neutral Buoyancy Laboratory helps prepare astronauts for spacewalks by simulating zero-g conditions.

Since 1994, Space Center Houston has served as the visiting center of JSC. It houses a variety of space artifacts, including the Galileo Shuttlecraft, Gemini 5 capsule, the Apollo 17 command module, and the lunar touchstone. Space Center Houston has events and education programs as well. A visit to the Space Center Houston can easily be enjoyed by people of all ages.
